Does "Fear" drive us more than "Rewards" ? 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hello,

I went through the Career Compass program which was really helpful and raised a lot of valuable questions about myself, my principles, my goals... One of the key ideas that is always good to be reminded about is "It is up to yourself to act".

After some introspective reflection I had the following question

Does "Fear" drive us more than "Rewards"? If so, what is your top 3 tips to overcome it.

For example:
- Fear of public speaking vs Gain to have completed a presentation
- Fear of failure vs Gain in experience
- Fear to be the first question in this forum

Thanks,
Serge

Serge ...

Thanks for being the first question!

This is a great question and brings up the whole pain / pleasure principle.

Our main drivers are to avoid pain or gain pleasure. We tend to avoid pain more then gain pleasure. This is one of the main reasons we stay stuck in The Rut.

To motivate yourselves out of The Rut you can ...

1) Leverage your strengths ... we enjoy using our strengths so the hard work is gone

2) Ask yourself ... what's the worst thing that can happen? Most fears turn out to be really minor once we get through it.

3) Stop taking ourselves so dam serious ... we spend so much time working ourselves up that we forget to have fun ... so when you find yourself getting stuck ... laugh it off!

Hope these quick tips help
